As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to affect all facets of life in the U.S., especially the healthcare system, the Patient Safety Fellowship will teach aspiring leaders the fundamentals of patient safety as they relate to preparedness and crisis intervention, using COVID-19 as a case study. Despite knowledge of the disease ahead of its spread in the U.S., how did the system fail to adequately prepare and provide an effective response in the initial phases of the outbreak? Through researching the ecosystem of authorities that influence patient safety, infectious disease and response, and by understanding the context that leadership plays in times of crisis, Fellows will have the opportunity to answer those questions.

During the 9-week program (8 sessions), Fellows will interact with some of the region’s and nation’s foremost experts in infectious disease, emergency preparedness, and experts in safety science to understand what went wrong and what worked well in the U.S. preparation and response to COVID-19. Fellows will develop leadership skills in crisis preparation and intervention, applying principles from epidemiology, predictive analytics, crisis leadership, and quality engineering to take away crucial learnings to prevent these missteps from happening again in the future. During the finale, Fellows will be tasked with synthesizing all of the lessons they have learned and lead a response to a simulated disaster scenario.

A virtual open house for candidates interested in learning more about the Fellowship will be held on Wednesday, April 8th from 12pm – 1:30pm.
