The Pittsburgh Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center is one of 12 NIA-funded Centers of Excellence in Geriatric Research, all of which are dedicated to promoting functional independence among older Americans. Funded initially in October of 2004, the mission of the Pittsburgh Center is to:

1. Promote independence in older adults through multidisciplinary research on mobility, balance and aging
2. To develop and test new preventive and therapeutic interventions to promote balance and mobiltiy, reduce falls and prevent fall injuries.
3. Pursue relevant research ranging from molecules to societies, but with a primary focus on human studies of mechanisms and interventions.

The Center accomplishes these goals through its Research Resource Cores, a Pilot studies program, a Career Development Program and a broad array of conferences, seminars and work groups. The Center works closely with leading research groups in aging and other relevant disciplines throughout the University of Pittsburgh, and with research groups both nationally and internationally.
