    Mobility Fact Sheets

Older adults often face difficulty with balance and mobility. Such problems can lead to problems with daily function, and even to injury, institutionalization or death. The Pittsburgh Pepper Center’s mission is to develop and promote new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat balance and mobility disorders. As part of our mission, we are developing a series of fact sheets about the impact of balance and mobility problems on a societal level. We hope that these fact sheets will increase awareness about the public health importance of balance and mobility in our aging population.

    1. The Burden of Mobility Disability
Difficulty with and inability to walk ¼ mile is common among Medicare beneficiaries and is associated with high health care costs.

    2. Seven Million Medicare Beneficiaries Amass 19 Million Falls in A Single Year: Men Fall More Often Than Women
Over 7 million elderly Medicare beneficiaries fell at least once in 2003 and amassed 19.3 million falls, with the highest burden in the oldest-old. Older people are falling much more than previously thought and men are falling more often than women.
